The
Highveld Smockers Guild was originally established as The South
African Smockers Guild in 1986. Many of its founder members are
still members of the Guild, and the membership continues to grow
as new members join the Guild. The Guild changed its name to The Transvaal Smocking Guild in 1994 when a group of ladies in Cape Town formed The Cape Smockers Guild. After the political changes in the country, the Guild formally changed its name to The Highveld Smockers' Guild when it adopted it's Constitution in June 1997. The Highveld Smockers' Guild is a non-profit organisation which is run by the members, for the members. The aims and functions of the Guild are laid down in the Constitution. The Highveld Smockers' Guild welcomes members, both from Gauteng and the rest of the country. An interest in, and a love of, smocking are the only criteria for membership -- proficiency is not a requirement. Membership is open to all ages and skill levels. Membership of the Guild enables you to receive new ideas, patterns and other information about smocking and related topics. You can learn new skills, and you can enhance existing ones. You will receive the Newsletter, have the opportunity to attend various meetings and workshops, and enter exciting competitions. The Highveld Smockers' Guild holds at least four Saturday afternoon meetings during the year. These meetings are currently held at the Waverley Girl Guide Hall, Sterling Street, Waverley, Johannesburg. These meetings take the form of talks or demonstrations on smocking and / or related topics, or hands-on teaching sessions dealing with a particular smocking project or technique. In addition to these meetings, other meetings are held during the week in member's homes. These meetings enable members to meet together socially, while also sharing their knowledge of smocking. The Guild publishes a Newsletter which is sent to all members. The Newsletter contains information about forthcoming meetings and other events of interest to smockers; notes, hints and tips by smocking teachers and the members; lists of smocking teachers and those who make smocked items for sale; and lists of shops that stock material, lace, patterns, threads and other items used by smockers. Since 1995 the various Smockers' Guilds in South Africa have held four very successful National Smocking Competitions, and the next competition is due to be held in 2005 ! |
